Public Art – Dancing with Shadows

Shade panels were commissioned by  Zonta Gladstone  and Gladstone Regional Council to provide shade for visitors to Civic Centre and to commemorate 25 years of service to the Gladstone Community and 100 years of Zonta International worldwide. Panels were manufactured and installed by Newprint HRG.

Design Brief

To provide shade at the front of the Council Chambers at 101 Goondoon Street, Gladstone by installing cut out panels on the top of the existing pergola structure.  

Design is to represent:

The Zonta Club of Gladstone Inc is celebrating twenty five years of service to the Gladstone Region and to recognise this milestone, the  Zonta Club would like to work with Council by contributing funds to a community project.  The symbol of the “Rose”, which represents the Zonta Club, is to be prominent in the design along with both the Gladstone and Indigenous Communities being represented.

Artist statement

When I was a little girl my Grandmother had the most beautiful display of white climbing roses.  They would drape over an archway in her garden. One of my fondest memories were of us dancing through the archway while one of my siblings would shake the archway. It was like it was snowing.

The rose is considered a symbol of balance. The beauty of this flower expresses promise, hope, and new beginnings. It is contrasted by thorns symbolizing defense, loss, and thoughtlessness.  Promise, hope, and new beginnings are all things that Zonta International achieve their quest make a difference to the lives of women and girls around the world and in our own community.

With acknowledgement of the Byellee, Gurang, Gooreng Gooreng, and Taribelang Bunda people being the traditional custodians of our region we welcome you to our community and this meeting place, the Gladstone Regional Council Civic Centre, 101 Goondoon Street, Gladstone.

We invite you to dance among the ever-changing pavement shadows, make time to reflect on the important history of our region, our mothers and daughters, our growth and our values, precious endangered fauna and aspire to be great role models and nurture our future generations.
