Aunty
Date: June – November 2019
Location: Gladstone Hospital, Courtyard
Size: 2m x 900mm
Project Type: Collaborative art sculpture
This mosaic wall hanging is a reminder of the power of community — that when we work together, we can create awareness, support one another and make a difference.
Created using a mixture of broken tiles and ceramics, the artwork sits alongside a mosaic sculpture in the form of a woman we call “Aunty.” Aunty is a symbolic figure representing care, guidance and hope. The fragmented pieces used in the artwork reflect the difficult realities many people face, while also representing the strength and resilience it takes to rebuild. Just as the broken pieces have been carefully brought together to form something whole again, the work speaks to the possibility of healing when people reach out for support.
The sculpture sits within a large fibreglass pot, with succulents donated by members of the community lining the top, adding a living element to the artwork and symbolising growth, care and renewal.
The project aims to bring awareness to the impact domestic and family violence has on individuals, families and the wider community.
Family, domestic and sexual violence is a major health and welfare issue in Australia. It occurs across all ages and across all socioeconomic and demographic groups, but women and children are disproportionately affected. Indigenous women, young women and pregnant women are particularly at risk.
The Family, Domestic and Sexual Violence in Australia (2018) report by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare highlights the scale of the issue within our own communities. While many people associate these challenges with distant places, the reality is that this crisis exists much closer to home.
