Painted on corrugated tin, this mural draws inspiration from the bold graphic style of early 20th century Australian travel posters, which once promoted regional destinations and the spirit of exploration across the country. These posters often celebrated landscape, industry and local identity, and this work reflects that same sense of place and storytelling.
The mural references the rich gold mining history of Calliope, Queensland, acknowledging the early goldfields that helped shape the development of the township. It also celebrates the long-standing presence of the Diggers Arms Hotel, a historic meeting place within the community that has welcomed travellers, workers and locals for generations.
Using corrugated tin as the surface pays tribute to the materials commonly seen in rural and mining communities across regional Australia. The texture of the metal adds depth and character to the work, connecting the mural to the built environment and heritage of the area.
The colour palette was carefully chosen to complement the newly renovated dining space of the Diggers Arms Hotel, allowing the artwork to sit naturally within the venue while still drawing on the warm, nostalgic tones often seen in vintage travel posters. Through a combination of history, design and local storytelling, the mural aims to honour the past while contributing a contemporary visual landmark for the community.
