Lillies – Floating Lake Installation

The Lillies installation activated the lake within Tondoon Botanic Gardens, creating a glowing floating landscape across the water during Luminous Gladstone 2019.

The installation featured six illuminated floating lily sculptures positioned across the lake, creating reflections that extended the visual impact of the work across the water at night.

The visual forms of the lilies were created using inflatable lounges, which were adapted and illuminated to form large sculptural petals floating on the lake.

Custom floating bases were developed to support the lighting and power systems while allowing the sculptures to remain stable on the water.

Each lily was fitted with its own battery-powered lighting system and timer, allowing the sculptures to automatically illuminate at the beginning of the event and switch off at the end of the night.

Developing this system required testing battery storage, lighting efficiency and timed electrical controls to ensure the installation could operate reliably without the need for external power cables across the lake.

Once installed, the glowing lilies created a calm and atmospheric visual moment within the event, with their reflections becoming part of the artwork itself.
